Cats Currently in Friends of Upland Animal Shelter Care

Following the removal of several hundred cats from two commercial units on West 11th Street on September 21, Friends of Upland Animal Shelter is providing ongoing care for approximately 400 cats.

Because this is an ongoing investigation, there are limits to the information we can provide. We will share additional information when we are permitted to do so.

When will the cats be available for adoption?

We do not know. The cats are part of an ongoing investigation and cannot currently be made available for adoption. We will provide an update when we are able to do so.  There are cats available for adoption at Upland Animal Shelter that are not part of this investigation.  Please come adopt!

Are foster opportunities available for these cats?

No. These cats do not require foster placement at this time.

However, there are many other shelter animals who do need foster homes. If you are interested in becoming a foster, we encourage you to apply through our website.

Can I volunteer to help?

At this time, we do not need additional volunteers to help care for these cats at the shelter. However, we do need foster homes for our other shelter animals who are currently eligible for foster care. You can apply on our Be a Foster Family page on our website.  If you are a Veterinarian, Registered Veterinary Technician, or Vet Tech, and are available for deployment to assist with this, please fill out our Veterinary Resource Form.

I surrendered a cat in the past. Can you tell me if my cat is among these cats?

If you previously surrendered a cat to Furget Me Not Purebred Cat Rescue, please submit your information through the Surrendered Cat Inquiry Form.

Because these cats are part of an ongoing law enforcement investigation, we are unable to provide any information at this time. However, submitting your information will allow us to keep it on file and contact you in the future if we are legally permitted to do so.

Are there both cats and kittens among the animals?

Yes. While the majority of these animals appear to be adult cats, we have received both kittens and adult cats in this case.  If you are looking for a kitten, please come to the shelter now as we are in the middle of “kitten season” and continue to have many kittens available for adoption now.

Why can't these cats be adopted or fostered right now?

The cats are part of an ongoing law enforcement investigation. Until the investigation is completed and Friends is authorized to do so, we cannot place these cats into foster homes or up for adoption.

How long will Friends need to care for these cats?

We don't know. Because the investigation is ongoing, there is currently no timeline for when the cats may be released for adoption, foster care, or other placement.

Friends is preparing to care for them for as long as necessary.

What does caring for approximately 400 additional cats involve?

The cats require daily care, including food, cat litter, cleaning, medical attention and medications as needed. Caring for this many additional animals also requires additional staffing and other resources.

These costs are in addition to the normal expenses of caring for the animals already at the shelter.

How can I help?

The most immediate way to help is by making a donation. Your support will help Friends provide food, litter, medical care, medications, temporary staffing and other necessities for these cats while they remain in our care.
